A MID-CENTURY INSPIRED KITCHEN DESIGN FOR A LEURA RESIDENCE
Our clients, enthusiastic foodies were looking for a new kitchen for their Leura home. The brief was for a functional and creative space with a well-considered floorplan ensuring they could both enjoy cooking together. With a love for mid-century design and colour, this Leura couple were looking for a kitchen that embraced the style with a playful approach. Our Interior Designer Fiona Harding went to work delivering a kitchen that is functional, fun and very hard wearing for these keen cooks!
The layout of the kitchen offered a galley style kitchen using a long island ensuring accessibility from both ends of the kitchen. This floorplan allows both resident cooks to move around easily, accessing cupboards, the sink and the cooking space. Fiona specified a plain face front door with a Polytech walnut finish for the cupboards and doors. This durable and affordable alternative to timber offers a classic 70s mid-century look. Finishing the cabinetry with unique and organic shaped knobs and drawer pulls in matt black completes the style known for interesting and creative touches.
For the cooking space, a stainless-steel bench provides a durable, non-porous and corrosion-resistant area, perfect for easy cleaning of this high use area. As well as the gas stove top, a separate wok plate and prep area completes a highly functional workspace. The remaining benches have been finished in black concrete-look stone.
Colour is introduced through with the backsplash with decorative tiles in a classic mid-century crescent motif, bringing movement, colour and light, lifting the surrounding walnut cabinetry. By finishing the tiles with epoxy grout, the backsplash is stain-resistant and easy to clean, making it less prone to discolouring from the cooking station.
An appliance station complete with power points is hidden behind the tambour roller-door, which reveals enough space to fit for a toaster, kettle and even a mixer. Overhead lighting makes the space ultra-functional and provide additional light where there is no natural light present. Once again, the decorative tiles with crescent motif are used as a splash-back to bridge together the two workspaces and break up the darker tones with light, movement and colour.
The long island style workstation includes a huge inset gun metal grey butlers sink, sized specifically to fit a wok or easily clean large pots. A favourite feature is the pull-out gooseneck tap in graphite lights red for hot water and blue for cold water, ensuring no burnt hands whilst cleaning up.
For the adjoining windows and sliding door, Fiona specified uniquely printed hen-inspired curtains. The colourful curtains pair with the backsplash tiles to perfection with their strong colour palette and curved pattern whilst offering a fun and unique conversational piece for visitors and guests.
Finally, the existing cork floor was replaced with a hard-wearing commercial vinyl flooring in ‘stone’, ensuring spills are easily cleaned in this highly functional space.
