A MINIMALIST MID-CENTURY INSPIRED KITCHEN IN LITTLE HARTLEY
Set against the serene backdrop of Little Hartley, this kitchen is a refined expression of mid-century modern design—reimagined for contemporary living. The client’s vision called for a timeless yet minimal design: a space defined by clean lines, generous functionality, and a sense of understated warmth. The result is a kitchen that feels open, inviting, and quietly sophisticated.
The transformation began with a structural shift. The removal of an oversized, outdated Auger stove and the removal of the auger chimney surrounds, simplified and allowed the space to breathe. In its place, an abundance of bench space and integrated storage now defines the layout, creating an open kitchen that encourages movement, connection, and ease. Each space carefully considered to maximise productivity without compromising the calm, uncluttered aesthetic.

A key feature of the design is the dedicated coffee station—blending practicality with lifestyle. Relocating the fridge enabled the inclusion of open shelving above and drawers below this highly functional nook, ensuring the everyday ritual of preparing a barista coffee is conducted with ease. Similarly, the integration of built-in ovens not only streamlines the overall look but also introduces additional storage, reinforcing the kitchen’s highly functional foundation.
At the centre of the space, the island bench becomes a true focal point. Rather than relying on bold colour, the design leans into texture—most notably by using cork on the island’s facade. This unexpected material introduces warmth, softness, and a tactile quality that elevates the entire room. It’s a subtle yet striking nod to mid-century design principles, where natural materials are celebrated for their authenticity.
The cabinetry, finished in Laminex “Gumnut,” introduces a subtle infusion of colour, lifting the overall tone of the kitchen and moving away from the heaviness of the previous timber faced cabinetry. Paired with matte finishes and stainless-steel appliances, including the rangehood, tapware, and fridge, the result is a balanced composition of natural warmth with contemporary design.
This softness is echoed in the detailing throughout. The gentle curves of natural timber handles, crafted in walnut, bring a mid-century quality to the cabinetry, balancing the clean, linear framework of the kitchen.
The splashback features square gloss Zellige tiles, offering an informal, reflective surface that catches the light and subtly adds depth and softness. This is paired with Caesarstone Fresh Concrete benchtops, finished with a 40mm mitred edge grounds the space with a refined, contemporary edge.
Ultimately, this Hartley kitchen is defined by its sense of openness and intentional clean design. It is a space designed not just for cooking, but for living and entertaining – where thoughtful details, natural textures, and a carefully curated palette come together to create a kitchen that feels both grounded and effortlessly inviting.
