A WENTWORTH FALLS KITCHEN INSPIRED BY DANISH MID CENTURY MODERN DESIGN
This modern brick Wentworth Falls property was acquired as a weekender, with a view to extend vacations into retirement. As such, our clients were looking for a new, contemporary mid-century modern style kitchen and two new bathrooms that would blend with the design aesthetic of their furniture collection. Director of Design and Decoration, Anne Hogarth came forward with a design, reminiscent of the minimalistic Danish Modern period, to blend with the furniture and ensure the kitchen remained in fitting with the exterior of the 90s brick home. In designing the new kitchen, Anne was conscious to ensure it also worked cohesively with the new bathrooms, bridging the home together seamlessly with warmth, and interesting design features.
The cabinetry features Laminex flat panel doors in the understated hue ‘Seed,’ introducing a refined sense of calm to this highly functional workspace. Open shelving provides an opportunity to curate ceramics and vintage objects, adding character and warmth. A maple-look timber edge detail frames the shelving, while the interior finished in Laminex ‘Seed’ creates a sense of depth and visual interest.
The minimalist style is enhanced with the absence of handles for the upper cabinetry. Whilst the bottom cabinets are fitted with Momo angle pull handles in dark metallic grey, for easy access.
Visual interest and texture are introduced using kit kat tiling in a tranquil ocean antique gloss finish. The tiles are completed with epoxy grout, which is nonporous, easy to clean and stain resistant, making it perfect for kitchen splashbacks.
For the kitchen benches, Anne specified hard wearing ‘Dekton’ engineered stone. This carbon neutral, ultra compact porcelain surface is a heat-resistant, scratch-resistant and UV-resistant surface, highly sustainable and high-performance surface perfect for kitchens and bathrooms. The bench was constructed with a ‘waterfall’ edge, to visually lengthen and further support the minimalist mid-century modern style.
Above the bench, a linear ‘Modi’ pendant light in matt black is perfect for the lower ceiling line, with its minimalistic form and straight lines, providing ample bench lighting, without dominating the space.
Above the sink, an easy clean roller blind is perfect for this high-splash area. In the nearby living space, beautiful, inverted box pleat lined curtains in James Dunlop Balance in Celadon, soften the space. Crafted from a poly-blend they are perfect for high traffic areas, offering durability and clean-ability especially with their proximity to the kitchen.
Finally, the inclusion of a black sink, bridges the feature light, cabinetry handles and black appliances together, creating a unified contrast against the softer tones of the cabinetry, tiles and bench, typical of the mid-century modern era.
