A FUSION OF ITALIAN, COUNTRY & MID-CENTURY STYLE FOR A KATOOMBA KITCHEN DESIGN
Stepping inside this Katoomba kitchen, you are immediately met with a sense of warmth and creative, bespoke design. When our client presented inspiration images with a mix of mid-century modern, Italian and even a little country style to Thornton & Blake’s Kitchen Architect Tiere, she knew this was the opportunity to bring new ideas forward, stretching the boundaries of standard kitchen design.
The brief was to create a kitchen that complemented the home’s original 1960s weatherboard architecture while delivering a contemporary, highly functional space for a young family of five. With three young children, durability, easy maintenance and effortless everyday living were essential. The result is a bright and inviting kitchen that captures the minimalist clean lines and timeless appeal of mid-century design infused with influences of Italian and country style seamlessly integrated with the functionality and modern conveniences of contemporary family life. A style they later referred to as ‘Mountains-Italian’.
At the heart of the kitchen, the well-proportioned island provides a place for the children to sit close by while their parents cook, ensuring family connection at the centre of the home.
The cabinetry was custom created as a fully bespoke element of the design, extending well beyond the standard offerings of kitchen manufacturers. The flat-faced doors are defined by a distinctive routed handle detail, developed specifically for the project to reflect a refined interpretation of mid-century simplicity. To ensure every detail was resolved before production, Tiere had sample doors cut and wrapped to completion in the high-gloss finish, allowing the profile, proportion and finish to be carefully considered and refined. This thoughtful level of craftsmanship and attention to detail is evident throughout the entire kitchen design.
During the design phase, the clients explored a few colour directions, including primary red and blue, before settling on a warm, buttery yellow gloss cabinetry finish paired with Quantum stone marble-style benchtops and splashback. Beyond adding natural texture and elegance, the softer tone of the cabinetry and lighter bench-tops helps to reflect the natural light entering through the window, which overlooks lush surrounding greenery.
Stainless steel was used in an unexpected way, wrapping the island, including the dishwasher, microwave nook and under-bench storage rather than simply appearing as a bench-top. The result is a nod to the contemporary Italian design influences paired to perfection with the warmth of the cabinetry and natural marble.
The sculptural island-style rangehood introduces a circular form that complements the softer influences of mid-century design. A pot-filler tap above the easy-clean ceramic cooktop is another thoughtful detail, particularly useful when preparing large pots of pasta for family and friends.
A dedicated breakfast nook carefully proportioned to reflect the early 60s mid-century influence, provides easy access to morning essentials — coffee, toast and tea — while floor-to-ceiling cabinetry delivers generous storage for a family of five without compromising the clean aesthetic.
The result is a kitchen that balances bespoke design, mid-century influence and modern family functionality. Warm yet minimalist, sophisticated yet practical, it is a space designed to be lived in and enjoyed for many years to come.
