A LUXURIOUS NATURE INSPIRED BATHROOM FOR A MULTI-GENERATIONAL FAMILY IN WINMALEE
Stepping into this Winmalee bathroom feels like entering a quiet retreat—where shadow, light, texture and warmth are thoughtfully composed to evoke a sense of calm. Designed by Thornton & Blake Interior Designer Fiona Harding, the brief was to extend the home’s luxe, dark and moody aesthetic into a sanctuary-like bathroom, while ensuring it remained highly functional for family living.
Beginning with the rich, earthy Porter’s ‘Chai’ for both the walls and ceiling gives a sense of depth, warmth and serenity, creating an almost cocoon-like stillness, an intentional pause from the pace of daily life.
Gentle curves and continuity ensure a gentle flow within this beautiful space. Non-rectified tiles are intentionally laid seamlessly across floors and walls, while a frameless walk-in shower allows the space to feel open and uninterrupted.
A sculptural arch, lined with bronze metallic penny round tiles, becomes a striking focal point—a refined touch of glamour as they reflect the light. Aged bronze tapware and a heated towel rail echo this tone, giving the space a sophisticated, day-spa feel.

Designed for a multi-generational family, this bathroom design successful balances beauty with practicality. A generous wet zone allows for playful bath time rituals with plenty of splash. Underfoot, Di Pitra natural stone tiles bring an organic softness, their P6 slip rating offering reassurance for the older generations using the space, without compromising on feel. Paired with underfloor heating, the space remains warm, dry, and quietly luxurious.
The bath itself was also carefully considered with a depth and length tailored for both comfort and peace of mind ensuring safety for the littlest member of the family.
Natural light plays a key role in the experience of the space. A newly introduced floor-to-ceiling reeded glass window, framed in black, replaces the original small, high-set opening. It filters soft daylight while drawing in the surrounding greenery, subtly weaving the Blue Mountains landscape into the interior palette.
The arch is reflected in the custom oak vanity styled with handmade ceramic basins. Hidden storage is cleverly tucked behind recessed cabinetry and softly lit oval mirrors. With three adjustable lighting settings, the space adapts effortlessly—from morning make-up rituals to evening wind-downs.
Layered lighting completes the experience. Aged bronze and reeded glass sconces cast a warm, ambient glow—transforming the bathroom into more than just a functional space, but an immersive, spa-like retreat inspired by nature’s palette.
