MID-CENTURY MODERN BATHROOM DESIGN FOR A HARTLEY HOME
Simple, practical and aesthetically warm, with a subtle nod to mid-century design, was the brief for this Hartley, Blue Mountains bathroom. The client was adamant that the shower recess remains completely open, with no glass enclosure, creating an effortless space that is easy to walk into, easy to move through and, importantly, easy to clean.
Stepping into the bathroom, you’re immediately met with a sense of warmth and texture from the sage green ceramic subway tiles that form the feature wall. Each tile brings its own subtle variation, creating depth and character across the space. Laid in a clean linear pattern and paired with crisp white grout, the arrangement celebrates the simplicity and refined lines synonymous with mid-century design, while adding dimension to the feature wall.
The remainder of the bathroom is finished in ___ ivory travertine tile, creating a soft, neutral backdrop that allows the green feature wall to take centre stage. The natural variation of the travertine adds warmth and interest without competing with the boldness of the feature tiles.
Heated vertical towel rails introduce a sense of height and architectural interest, while also keeping towels warm and dry, particularly during the cooler winter months.
A Florentine walnut timber veneer wall-hung vanity with an inset sink continues the bathroom’s emphasis on clean, linear forms, softened by a gentle curved corner that adds a distinctive detail. The semi-inset basin is both considered and practical, helping to minimise the risk of everyday wear and tear while maintaining a streamlined aesthetic. Above, a circular mirror provides a simple, minimal finish and echoes the soft curve of the vanity below. Brushed nickel tapware completes the scheme, adding a refined touch to this warm and inviting space.
Framing the large, light-filled window, a light-filtering polyester blind provides privacy while still allowing generous natural light to flood the room. Easy to clean with warm, textural aesthetic, it is a practical finishing touch that adds further depth to overall design.
