MOUNTAIN ELEGANCE: BLACKHEATH KITCHEN & STRIKING ENSUITE
Modern, intuitive elements meet traditional classic design for this striking Blackheath property. Originally a weekender, Thornton & Blake clients decided to make this modern weatherboard their permanent residence following the COVID lockdowns. With a love for simple, yet strong design, they called on Anne Hogarth, Director of Design & Decoration at Thornton & Blake to redesign the interiors of this 3-bedroom cottage, into a space that they truly love.
With beautiful white timber windows & quintessential weatherboard cottage exterior, a fusion of modern meets traditional, timeless interior design begins in the kitchen.
A galley style kitchen, finishing, with a window that peers into the picturesque garden was marked as a convenient workspace for these hard-working professionals. Anne thoughtfully selected a roman blind in Handprinted Ink and Spindle fabric, with custom colour print, to give an Artisan’s touch to the space. The kitchen design included space for a stool, so that the clients could attend to their late night emails and to catch up on the morning news headlines, before they head to the studio, where their professional offices were located.
The shaker profile cabinetry was a perfect fit for the ‘country style’ weatherboard. Dulux Antarctic Deep was chosen for the base cabinetry, which was also used on a feature wall in the adjoining lounge room. Contrasting white benches and wall cabinets reflect light, keeping the space fresh and bright. Timber shelving displays much loved cast iron cookware. The new kitchen is both hardwearing and functional for these lovers of creative cooking.
Above the sink, a roller blind was installed in a durable, wipeable Hamptons fabric, to ensure longevity for the wet space. The warm grey and indigo texture of the blind provides softness against the sharp contrasting Indigo Blue and White colour palette of the cabinetry.
Clean and classic chrome handles, tap ware and appliances also work to soften and compliment the cool colour palette. Brickart white textured tiles with a narrower profile, were laid in a subway fashion on the walls, adding texture, interest and movement to the walls.
The Southern end of the kitchen is designed for entertaining. A cleverly placed island at the entry of the kitchen provides function, versatility and ease of access as well as a space for guests to enjoy a cocktail or glass of wine, whilst conversing with the home chef. Above the island, ‘Industry’ pendants accentuate the tall ceilings and provide an anchor and light over the island workspace.
A cocktail station and wine fridge positioned beside the island ensures no one goes thirsty, remaining true to good old fashioned Blackheath hospitality.
Moving into the ensuite, the classic design continues. Timeless black tiles are positioned vertically on the walls to accentuate the height of the ceiling. Contrasting clean white custom wall vanity, with shaker profile doors and white stone top ensure a cohesive design with the kitchen along with the chrome tap ware, handles and heated towel rail.
The classic design continues with stunning ‘Worcester’ wall sconces in polished chrome positioned either side of the custom designed mirrored shaving cabinet.
White shutters, perfect for wet spaces, provide light control, whilst maintaining privacy and remain sympathetic to the design of the rest of the house.
The Kaldewei classic duo oval freestanding bathtub with its unique ceramic surface and tap ware offers classic elegance, convenience, and durability with sustainable design. Finally, the Revisi Silver floor tiles offer a softer, silver/grey tone, chosen to offer movement and softness within a classic, stark contrasting palette of black and white throughout the rest of the space.
