Recently we were discussing the portfolio of interior designs for our Blue Mountains clients. Whilst there is very much a common theme of ‘Relaxed Elegance’ amongst Thornton & Blakes projects, the diversity is in the details, resulting in a broad range of designs, styles, colour palettes and moods.
Why? The team at Thornton & Blake have some very important priorities in creating designs which reflect the clients very own personal style, including the way they live. Equally as important is creating a design which will enhance the unique features of the varied range of homes that our clients reside in.
Understanding the client’s personal style
When we first meet with our clients, we listen to the story of their unique lifestyle. What ‘home’ represents to them, and how they like to spend their time. Whether it is a property reserved for weekends away, to share with a growing family or to take them into retirement, understanding how our clients like to spend their time is the first step towards creating a design that our clients truly love.
Nostalgia also plays an important role in creating an interior design. Meaningful memories, pieces, even colours. It is through our experiences that dreams are created and, in some cases, even recreated. Incorporating sentimental features, art, souvenirs or furniture into our designs ensures the client’s space is one where they feel at ‘home’.
Whilst trends can influence a design, we like to adopt these ideas subtly, so that they will remain timeless within the landscape of the interior. Of course, if a client is set on an idea, we will always work to deliver on their vision, with the mindset that trends can most certainly be adopted and blended in ways that the interior will not become ‘dated’ over time.
Designing for a unique space
Whether architecture of the space is mid-century modern, Victorian, contemporary or otherwise, ensuring the interior design is cohesive with the character of the home is important.
Choosing colours and textures which reflect the light and mood of the space, particularly for the doors and windows, is key to setting the tone of the interior, as these are the areas which offer focal dominance.
Accentuating feature elements of the unique architectural design, such as interesting ceiling lines, arches, exposed beams or brickwork, whilst simultaneously allowing the spatial design and flow to guide the layout ensures the interior design is cohesive with its environment.
Our Blue Mountains location is the key element which delivers the relaxed elegance of Thornton & Blakes Interior Designs. Leaning into the client’s personal style, including their lifestyle and sentimental stories paired with the architectural influence of the building, spatial flow and unique interior features means that our projects are each as unique as the clients we design for.
