THE IMPORTANCE OF CREATING A COHESIVE INTERIOR DESIGN FOR YOUR HOME
Interior Design isn’t reserved for creating just one room at a time. A well-designed home is one that orchestrates harmony and balance throughout the spaces. Seamlessly blending the various elements of wall colours, textiles, curtains and blinds, flooring and furnishing between each space not only ensures an element of consistency between the rooms, but it also ensures the home designed is a true reflection of your own authentic style, welcoming you each day to a space you truly love.
Harmonising the Elements
A cohesive interior design does not mean that every space needs to be the same. Cleverly executed cohesive design ensures elements such as tone, texture, scale, and form are shared between the spaces, to create a ‘journey’ between each of the ‘rooms’, ensuring consistency of feeling as well as a flow of aesthetic.
One Step at a time
Creating a cohesive interior design for your entire home needn’t be an overnight project. In fact, many clients invest in their interiors over a period of months and even years. Undertaking a renovation all at once is not only costly but can also be very stressful. At Thornton & Blake, we often encourage our clients to view the design of their home as a step-by-step process. Whether it begins with a room or series of rooms, such as kitchen and dining, then the lounge and/or bedrooms, or breaking the renovation into elements, for example starting with the painting, then the curtains and blinds and then the furnishings.
Either way, building a relationship with a Designer you can trust is worth its weight in gold in creating spaces which are consistent, cohesive, and timeless.
Function over form
One of the biggest challenges to overcome with cohesive interior design is ensuring functionality takes priority in considering the aesthetic elements of a home. Selection of colours, finishes, textiles, and styles are carefully considered alongside the overall layout of the home, each rooms floorplan, access to space, how frequently each space will be used and by whom.
If ensuring a design is timeless and cohesive, one wants to ensure that the investment they are going to make is going to last the distance of time.
Investing for the long term
A timeless interior design begins with investing in quality workmanship. With the advice of an experienced professional, you can rest assured that the curtains or blinds you’ve selected will be durable, ensuring for example that the textiles and hardware will endure the wear and tear of your family, or withstand the fading aspect of a North Facing window.
Similarly, choosing quality furnishings, such as a custom designed, Australian made Molmic Sofa, will ensure that the upholstery and cushion fill will be suitable for your family (including the furry ones), and that the aesthetic of the lounge will remain timeless…even outlasting the 10-year structural manufacturer’s warranty on the frame of the sofa.
How the process takes place
At Thornton & Blake, our experienced interior designers consider it their key mission to create a space that you truly love.
When you begin working with an experience Designer, they will work together with you in determining a brief that considers your very own personal style. Through asking a series of questions, or viewing some inspiration images that you have selected, they will piece together a series of elements, including colours, tones, shapes, texture, and form that you are drawn to. They will also consider who lives there and the frequency of use of each space. This will set the foundation for your brief and set the tone for the interior design of your home. This design brief can then be considered for each space and/or element that you invest in over forthcoming the years, ensuring you have a cohesive and timeless interior design, that you love coming home to.
