CONTEMPORARY DESIGNS FOR A LEURA WEATHERBOARD

The client of this Leura property was looking for a contemporary revival of a classic Blue Mountains Weatherboard. They enlisted the services of local builder DC Constructions to extend the living space and kitchen to accommodate their family. Thornton & Blake was appointed to collaborate with DC Constructions on the consultation and specification of a Jetmaster Open Universal Firebox, the perfect choice to provide radiant warmth to two living spaces with its double sided wood insert. A custom made marble surround supported the client brief for a contemporary interior design, whilst remaining sympathetic to the age of the original building.

For the living spaces, the client was looking for simple, yet elegant drapes and blinds, specifically neutral in colour, so that their bold coloured feature furnishings could take focus. The custom designed translucent roller blinds and sheer drapes were selected to provide privacy, without blocking the light. On the taller windows, the sheers were paired with pure linen drapes with a blockout backing to offer a lovely, natural texture and warmth for this quintessential Mountains weatherboard. As linen is prone to movement with the humidity, the drapes were made slightly oversized to accommodate the changes in drop with fluctuating weather patterns. We also don’t mind the drama that is created when they hit the floor on humid days.

Finally, in the bedrooms, custom made block out roman blinds were the understated, yet functional choice for the original period windows. Once again, ensuring the neutral colour chosen did not dominate the room, allowing the furnishings to take focus within the space.
